Welcome to Houston READ Commission's Blog!

by Houston READ Commission Executive Team 29. March 2010 23:16

We are thrilled to introduce the Houston READ Commission's first and only blog--aimed at improving communication between Houston READ Commission and it's Mayor's Coalition for Literacy members.  You can post event updates and requests for volunteers, information and assistance in all aspects of your provider agency.

This blog will also offer an opportunity for donors, volunteers and learners alike to include concerns and suggestions for improvement to Houston's literacy landscape.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I have a suggestion that you may already be aware of: Public schools seem to have few to no resources for addressing the problem of older students who cannot read. In working as a volunteer with some of these students, I came to the conclusion that they could really benefit from Adult Literacy programs, and I believe the READ commission could accomplish this as part of the students' regular school day. Some are so poorly proficient in English that they cannot read, but I believe many cannot read in their native language, either. I was working with kids from the Port Houston area, and I observed that there is a social barrier that might be overcome if they were treated as young adults and not as children when trying to learn to read. No one of that age wants to know about "Dick and Jane". Unfortunately, I cannot volunteer for your programs because of my own vision problems and the fact that I am principal caregiver of a family member at home. Thanks for taking the time to listen to me. Sincerely, Mary Crowly

Mary,

Thanks for the suggestion!  I think we can all agree the need for adult literacy is overwhelming.  The more help and awareness we can galvanize, the better!

Thanks again,
Houston READ Commission
