Job Title:  Communications and Development Specialist

Reporting Relationship: Reports directly to the Vice President of Development and Communications

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Primary Purpose/Function of Position:

As a member of the Marketing and Development team, the Communications and Development Specialist will assist in the advancement of Houston Center for Literacy's (HCL) mission by promoting the organization through media relations, internal and external communications, special events, social media, and the management of the company website. This person will also assist in researching, writing, and editing grant applications.



  • Assist in executing marketing communications and media strategy for the organization, ensuring public understanding of HCL's work,
  • Prepare, design, and plan the dissemination of press releases, media alerts, public service announcements, news articles, e-newsletters, and bulletins for the following: special events, provider relations projects, and general marketing, communications, and public relations assignments,
  • Promote and organize special events, as needed,
  • Review the HCL website regularly and revise/update, as warranted, soliciting input from staff,
  • Manage HCL's social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, updating changes in information and important news as it becomes available,
  • Research/Identify foundations and corporations for funding opportunities,
  • Assist in developing proposals for government, corporate, foundation, and individual grants/gifts,
  • Help create and organize the City of Houston Report,
  • Maintain fundraising and donor contact information in database, 
  • Other duties, as assigned


Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field; 1-3 years of demonstrated ability in fundraising, public relations, written communications, website maintenance, graphics and design; excellent computer skills, including MS Office Professional. desktop publishing software such as Adobe Creative Suite, and CRM software such as Raiser's Edge; excellent critical thinking, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, creativity skills; teamwork-minded with the ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks.
