The Houston READ Commission hosted the Financial Literacy Carnival during Money Week Houston on April 23-24 at the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center (6402 Market St.). Members of the community came out in droves to learn about money management and at the same time enjoy the carnival atmosphere! The event featured guest speakers City of Houston Controller Annise Parker, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Sheriff Adrian Garcia ! Food was generously donated by Rice Epicurean.

The Houston READ Commission's 17th Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee was held on February 12, 2009 at St. John’s School in Houston. The Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee is a corporate and non-profit team competition that raises community awareness and program support for the Houston READ Commission.

This event benefitting the Houston READ Commission was co-chaired by Superintendent of HISD, Dr. Abe Saavedra, and his wife, Myrna. Emcee Wendy Corona directed the event, while Houston Dynamo star Brian Ching and the Houston Chronicle’s Ken Hoffman served as celebrity judges! Thank you to all of our participants.
